Choosing metrics for retention

Practical notes for Pathfinder cohorts

Financial planning tools and notes on a desk

Retention is not a single number. A savings product, a grocery app, and a learning platform all “retain” differently. Copying a SaaS N-day chart onto every journey board is how teams invent crises.

Start from the job

Ask what successful return looks like in the customer’s words. For a pharmacy delivery service it may be “reorders when the chronic script renews,” not daily opens. Instrument that cadence, then visualize adherence — not dopamine.

Pair retention with recovery

A dip means little without knowing whether customers returned through help channels. Time-to-recover belongs beside classic retention curves on any serious journey analytics platform.

Keep a kill list

Every quarter, retire one metric that no longer changes decisions. Boards that only accumulate signals eventually stop being read. APIRoute Center treats metric funerals as a mark of maturity.
